I’m Gladys Mwangi, and I am writing this as someone who’s been through the car-buying journey in Kenya for more than a decade now. My write-up is a well-researched review, not just an ordinary review that you find online.
I am here to provide you with reliable information that will help you find the perfect Mazda CX-5 for sale in Kenya. We’ll talk about actual market prices, what the car is really like to drive, common problems to watch out for, and other models that compete with the CX-5.
Mazda CX-5 was first produced in 2012, and it took the “Kodo” design language, which makes it look luxurious and sleek.
The car is spacious enough and offers a seating capacity of 5 passengers and a medium-sized boot.
It comes in five trim levels with high-standard features such as advanced safety features, excellent steering and handling, a luxurious interior, and a turbocharged engine.
The Mazda CX-5 has solid fuel efficiency, with consumption ranging between 10 km/L and 19 km/L.
The model also features a beautiful screen on the dashboard and 19-inch Alloy wheels, which lend it an aesthetic appeal.

Mazda CX5: Key Specifications and Features that You Should Know
Knowing what you’re getting into will save you from future disappointments. The Mazda CX-5 comes with various engine options and features that make it worth considering.
Engine, Performance, and Fuel Consumption
- Engine Options:
- 2.0L Skyactiv-G Petrol: The model perfectly fits city drives and everyday commutes. It is reliable and efficient.
- 2.5L Skyactiv-G Petrol: The model offers more power for highway drives. It is perfect for those people looking for extra performance.
- 2.2L Skyactiv-D Diesel: The model delivers excellent torque and respectable fuel economy. It is perfect for long-distance drives and business.
- Fuel Consumption: Given the fuel prices in Kenya, it is important to consider the fuel consumption of the vehicle you’re purchasing. Mazda CX-5 is reasonably economical. The 2.0l petrol delivers a consumption rate that ranges between 14-16km/l, the 2.5 petrol 10-15 km/l and the 2.2 Diesel 15-19km/l.
- Key Features: This depends on the trim levels and the year of manufacture
- Push-button start and keyless entry.
- Dual-zone climate control.
- Premium sound systems, including the excellent Bose option.
- Advanced safety features like Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) and Smart City Brake Support (SCBS).
- Heated leather seats and a sunroof for that luxury feel.
Mazda CX-5 for Sale in Kenya - Reasons Behind Its Popularity
You’ve probably noticed an increasing number of Mazda CX-5s cruising around Nairobi and Kenyan roads in general. If you take a drive down Ngong Road, Thika Road or visit any car yard in Industrial Area, or Kiambu Road, you’ll find a good number of Mazda CX5s. This popularity isn’t just an accident; it’s because this SUV actually meets everybody’s expectations. But what exactly makes it such a hot favourite among Kenyan drivers?
Striking "KODO" Design and Premium Feel
The CX-5’s design philosophy, which Mazda calls “KODO – Soul of Motion,” is simply beautiful. I’ve had people ask me if the model is a German machine because it looks so posh. The flowing lines and elegant shape make the SUV stand out among its rivals.
The interior feels like you’re driving something much more expensive. The interior is made of high-quality materials, the surfaces are soft, and everything is arranged perfectly for the driver.
Technology & Performance
- Skyactiv Technology: Every manufacturer has a unique name for its technology. Skyactiv is the real deal in the automotive industry. What you’ll get is an engine that consumes less but gives the power you need, a light yet stronger body, and a transmission that delivers what you need.
- Engine Variants for the Kenyan Market:
- 2.0L Petrol (PE-VPS): Most clients go for this model. It delivers a consumption of 16 km/l on the highway, which in today’s fuel price environment is like money in the bank.
- 2.5L Petrol (PY-VPS): For performance enthusiasts, those who want that extra kick when overtaking matatus on Thika Road, this 2.5L is a perfect option. The model delivers a consumption of 10-15 km/l, but the confidence it gives when climbing hills is worth every coin.
- 2.2L Diesel – This is a model that I can recommend to anyone doing long-distance drives or running a business. It delivers a consumption of 15-19km/l even when fully loaded.
- All-Wheel Drive (AWD): During the rainy season, when half of Nairobi’s roads turn into rivers, this AWD system is what keeps you moving while others are stuck. I once experienced the power of CX-5s when we were coming to Nairobi from Muranga, and it rained heavily; the CX-5 we were travelling in handled the muddy Murangá roads perfectly.
Advanced Safety and Technology Features
Many of the imported models come packed with Mazda’s i-Activsense suite. These gadgets play a crucial role in your everyday drive as they act as lifesavers.
- Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM): Have you ever tried changing lanes on Uhuru Highway or Thika Road during rush hour? Then you’ll appreciate the function of this little orange light on the Mazda CX5
- Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA): This system spots cars you can’t see and gives you a heads-up.
- Lane Departure Warning System: This is perfect for those long drives to upcountry when fatigue starts setting in.
- Smart City Brake Support: In Nairobi’s stop-and-go traffic, this can save you from that embarrassing (and expensive) rear-end collision.
Practicality and Value for Money
Here’s what really matters when you’re thinking of long-term ownership in Kenya:
- Availability of Spare Parts: I can confirm, based on my experience, that CX-5 parts are now readily available from local suppliers. What used to require ordering from Dubai or Japan can now be sorted right here in Nairobi, or any auto spare shop near you, saving you both time and money.
- Maintenance: The beauty of Skyactiv engines is their simplicity. I know several local mechanics based in major towns such as Nairobi, Thika, Nakuru, Kisumu, among other towns, who’ve become CX-5 specialists, so you’re not tied to expensive dealership services for everything. Regular maintenance can be done at your trusted neighbourhood garage.
- Resale Value: This is where the CX-5 really proves its worth. The demand for the model is soo high in Kenya that a well-maintained CX-5 holds its value better than most of its rivals. When it’s time to upgrade, you’ll be surprised by the amount it’ll fetch..
Common Issues with Mazda CX-5
No car is perfect, and the Mazda CX-5 is no exception. My experience with this car has been positive. However, you need to know what to watch out for, especially when buying a used model in Kenya.
- Diesel Engine Issues: The 2.2L Skyactiv-D diesel engine is excellent on fuel. However, it requires proper maintenance. The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) can get clogged if you only drive short distances in the city.
- Infotainment System Glitches: Some early models (2013-2017) had software issues with the Mazda Connect system. The touchscreen might freeze or Bluetooth might not connect properly. These can usually be fixed with a software update.
- Suspension Wear: Our Kenyan roads are tough on any car. Worn suspension components in the CX-5 can cause knocking sounds over bumps.
- Limited cargo space
- Fuel-thirsty turbo

Mazda CX-5 for Sale in Nairobi Kenya – AWD/FF
You can opt to have an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) model or a Front Wheel Drive (FF). All Wheel Drive vehicles are more potent as the power is distributed to all the wheels.
FF/FWD is less potent than AWD as the power is only distributed to the front wheels.
In terms of fuel consumption, an AWD model consumes more than FWD as more power is required.
It’s essential to consider the intended use when choosing the drive. FWD is ideal for towns, highways, and cities.
AWD is a perfect choice for off-road driving, given its greater wheel control and power.
MazdaCX-5 for Sale in Kenya – Fuel Consumption
The engine capacity determines the fuel consumption.
Its 2500cc model consumption range between 10km/l- 15km/l while 2000cc model range between 14km/l – 16km/l and the 2.2 diesel model ranges between 15km/l – 19km/l
Mazda CX-5 Review in Kenya - Engine Capacity
Engine capacity determines the vehicle’s performance; the higher the engine capacity, the higher the performance.
The car comes with an engine capacity that ranges between 2000cc and 2500cc.
MazdaCX-5 Interior Review
The car interior features five passenger seats, state-of-the-art technology, and ample cargo space.
Additionally, the new generation model is an improvement from the previous model, and it features:
- 30.9 cubic feet cargo space which can be extended to 60 cubic feet by folding the back seat
- 7-inch touch screen display
- Sunroof
- Cruise control
Comfort and Legroom
The model has enough space and comfortable seats.
With 41 inches, front-seat legroom, and 39.6 inches back seat legroom, everybody feels comfortable and enjoys the ride.
Seat and Child Seat
The vehicle has five comfortable seats, which can be reclined for extra comfort. Both the front and the rear seats offer enough headroom.
Fitted on the rear outboard seats are LATCH connections with a tether anchor on the middle seat.
Boot Space
Cargo space is limited to only 31 cubic feet, but it can be expanded to 60 cubic feet by folding down the back seat.
Extra Features
Extra features for this model include; Adaptive headlights, Head-up display, surrounding-view parking camera system, front and rear parking sensor, and traffic sign recognition.
CX5 Exterior Review
The exterior of the vehicle is designed to maximize its capability and bring out that luxurious look. The most notable features include:
Kodo Design
This design was introduced in 2010, and it was first featured in the CX-5. It is not a complex design as it only uses single flowing lines that give the vehicle a sleek look.
19-Inch Alloy Wheel
The 19-Inch Alloy wheel is more eye-catching, and visually they are more proportional to the car body. Additionally, the Alloy wheels are more robust and do not break easily.
Mazda CX-5 Reviews - What Past Buyers Are Saying?
All our past clients seem to have liked the car, as it is reflected from the feedback below:
Maxwell N.
“I just took home my new ’21 Signature after having my Toyota Fielder for the past five years. They are non-comparable in terms of performance. Mazda seems to be in continuous refinement, just making models with super performance.”
George
“I bought a 2018 Cx 5 GT after test-driving a few of its rivals’ compact crossovers and have no regrets so far. It’s fun to drive and features many of the latest safety and some luxury features.
I would like to see a slightly better lumbar support and slightly larger boot space. That would have made this a perfect 10/10 for me.”
Beatrice K.
‘‘I’ve had my vehicle for two months now and am thrilled by its performance. Having owned other generations of Mazda before, I expected excellent handling, and for sure, this car delivers. I’ve enjoyed value for my money.’’
Nelson H.
“This is my second CX-5. My previous one was the 2017 CX-5 GT which was the best at the time. The 2021 model is amazing in every aspect. For instance, the comfort is on another level, features are high tech, and the power is amazing. I love the interior, especially the screen on the dashboard.”
Beatcrice M
I own a 2015 CX-5 and enjoy it on a nearly daily basis. In selecting a car, I test drove several competitors including the Subaru Forester, the Nissan Rogue, and the Toyota RAV4. However, I enjoyed the secure yet responsive handling of the CX-5 more than the handling in the others. I also enjoy the CX-5’s thoughtful details such as the intuitive interior controls. If I could change anything, I’d put a larger engine in the CX-5. I appreciate the gas savings of the SkyActiv system but find it slightly under-powered compared to Mazda’s other offerings such as the older, non-SkyActiv Mazda3’s and 6’s.
Jim
“After having my Audi Q5 for years, I’m now in love with the CX-5 even more. It has a modern feel, and it looks sleek. Its features carried away my heart, and I could not resist buying one. What I love most about the vehicle are its performance and reliability.”
Kamau
“The vehicle is such an amazing family car. I travel with my whole family to upcountry, and the amazing thing is that we still get a space to pack our bags and other stuff.”
Adrian
I love my 2020 CX-5 Touring AWD, and I have covered close to 40k miles since new. It has the premium package, so it has a sunroof, power lift gate, and Bose stereo. It’s not a turbo, so it’s not fast, but it’s definitely not slow. It handles well in all weather conditions. Two complaints I have are some very low speed jerkiness in traffic, moving like 4 to 5mph, and the gas mileage is not great. It averages between 25-26, driving mostly in town.
